What are they celebrating? - well, the year 2012, duh.
What started it all off in the first place? - I don't know, lots of people before me celebrating new year every year for centuries?
I have the strange feeling that I might have misunderstood the puzzle. And that I am uselessly exposing myself to klaxons for the sake of (poor) comedy

Can I say it's a bit cruel to award klaxons for quite reasonable guesses like the Queen's diamond jubilee!
Turing's interesting, but this might also be the centenary of Scott's last expedition to the Antarctic.

In his defence Icy, it was an obvious answer, which is what klaxons are awarded for, how about Wooten Basset? They will become Wooten Basset i believe.

the obvious answer I see is almost certainly a Klaxon that's why I am not giving you a different spelling on post number 13.
