"Laika" isn't really a name, more a description. It just means "Barker", and was a breed of dog. She was really named "Kudrjawka".

(This I know because of a very strange exhibition in the Museum of Jurassic Technology, where they have an entire gallery dedicated to oil paintings of dogs involved in the Soviet space programme smiley - weird)
