I thought it might be the first worms in space , maybe on a space shuttle but I do remember something about the first mice in space.
The Russian dog was the first animal in space apart from some bacteria I guess but I think it orbited the Earth so maybe the mice were shot off into deep space to see how they would go in zilch grav on their little turning wheel?
Did they ever send a canary into space to see how it flew in zilch-grav?

How about decade instead of exact year then? In which case I'd answer the 60's and USA as benjy/benjii doesn't sound Russian enough for me.

Maybe they are the international space station's mascots so I'd go for the noughties or nineties.
Silly fact# whatever : When Skylab crashed to Earth it spread itself over parts of the the vast Australian State, Western Australia which is quite big and relatively unpopulated but it does have shires and councils and one would presume they have in their employ some very vigilant Council Ranchers or Wardens as one Shire Council in WA sent the US Government a bill for $400 (AUD) for...Littering !
