All of them relate to grids. There's your answer.

Grids are made up of lines, grids can be squares within squares (squares in more ways than one), and chefs have been known to use grids of wire - called sieves.

Now, am I the only one who has had a bellyful of grids, and of people looking for the right answer or the klaxon before even thinking of anything interesting?

Let's get QI - Quite Interesting - back on track. It has become a self-parody.

(There would have been QI points for anybody who said anything Quite Interesting, though.)

The long line is the equator....

The square is in Alexandria.......

And another square is in Syene, on the Tropic of Cancer...

Eritosthenes calculated the Circumference of the Earth to be one fiftieth of the distance from Syene to Alexandria. If the distance from Syene to Alexandria was one fiftieth of the arc of a circle Eritosthenes said that the circumference of the Earth was 40,000 miles........

This is incredible if you think that all Eritosthenes had was string, legs and thought.....

You can fill in a square with a single line:
