Well if everyone else is doing one here is my grid:
SQUEAK JANE RATTLE SWEAT
BOOK PAUL DEWEY LINE
LAKE SKIP EDD CRACKLE
STUMBLE STOCK STILLS TAG
Points for groups, reasons and full explanations.
No Google, Bing, Yahoo or Ask Jeeves - ooh another group.
No klaxons. Extra points for little known factoids as per.

Musicians is about right but the group is not correct.

I hate to leave things unfinished, so do you want a clue or the answers.
All the words also have one thing in common.

Is "EDD" a typo?
In all honestly, my dictionary (calls itself "Pocket") has 60,000 words but that one isn't in there.
Can we at least use Wiktionary to look it up?
Or would it be fairer if you would post all the definitions of it that you have in your dictionary? (Name-dropping the brand of dictionary in question would help)

Jane, Paul, Lake and Stills are members of musical trios:
Rod, JANE & Freddie; Peter, PAUL & Mary; Emerson, LAKE & Palmer; Crosby, STILLS & Nash.
Squeak, Dewey, Crackle and Tag are cartoons/puppets:
Pip, SQUEAK & Wilfred; Huey, DEWEY & Louis; Snap, CRACKLE & Pop; Rag, TAG & Bobtail.
All the words seem to be the middle of threes.
I'd guess: blood, SWEAT & tears; Hook, LINE & sinker; Hop, SKIP & jump; Lock, STOCK and Barrel.
Which leaves rattle, book, Edd and Stumble but all I can think of is 'Shake, RATTLE & Roll'
Has anyone started an Only Connect forum yet?

"Hook, LINE & Sinker
Bell, BOOK & Candle
Blood, SWEAT & Tears
Lock, STOCK & (two smoking) Barrels"
I think you may be right about that because they're all completenesses of sorts. Having said that, I can't remember whether one from each line goes in each group.
Hop, Skip and Jump weren't cartoon characters as such but they were characters in Enid Blyton's Brownie Tales. Mind you, Snap, Crackle and Pop are sort elf type characters, hmmm...
