In that case, linking with the Bard, we could be talking of King Lear!!

Act 12, scene 13, or some such?

Or the 12th king of England defeating the 13th king of France?

I am curious about your opening post using the phrase "A yew wood". Did you actually mean 'wood' in the sense of an area of land covered by multiple yew trees, or did you mean 'wood' as in the material (for making bows out of)?

As pointed out in something I saw on the BBC only last night, one of the reasons why yew trees have survived in church yards for so long is that they are such a nuisance to farmers (poisonous to horses and livestock) that they have been chopped down virtually everywhere else.

I'm not saying that yew plantations do not exist, merely that they must have become few and far between, after the longbow became obsolete.

the common theme during the hundred years war, was a controlled rampage across france

at the start of the campaign season the army would form up and head out destroying everything in its path, the message being"the pretender in paris should be out here stopping this if he were the real king, swear loyalty to the english king and it will stop".

as loyalties and traties, fueds and dissputes fermented the players on ech side was constantly in flux and one years allies could soon turn out to be next years enemy and the subject of this rampage.

many men became enobled during the war

what would happen was if a noble was captured the soldier holding him could ransom him back to his family for a lot of cash, but that took time, so the king would offer to buy the noble from the soldiery for cold hard cash, there and then. the soldiery then being rich could then buy a title from the king, gaining a leap up in social status and some nice new armor and weapons and some land at home for his income, the king got a lot of his money back.

the king then could use the prisoner to raise cash as a ransom or put preasure on the family to swap sides or as leverage in any other agrement and gain oaths to strengthen his position.
