Ok outside the box.....
HMS Saltash was a ship that was on hand at Dunkirk. The bridge being part of the ship had guns on it so when attacked by the german air force it fought back.
Hows that for an attempt at a propper answer...

How about the bridge over the Elbe at Dresden, just for an attempt at something interesting?
It's commonly called the "Blaues Wunder" - the "Blue Wonder", because it was one of the first cantilevered bridges of the late 19th Century, and it's painted blue. The name is a pun, because a "blue wonder" is an unpleasant surprise.
It was nearly destroyed by the Wehrmacht in 1945, who were retreating and wanted to blow up the bridge behind them to win time. Several civilians went and disabled the bombs, so it's still around to be a symbol for the city today. (Unlike the church, which was only recently rebuilt after being destroyed in a bombing.)

St Paul's was damaged during the war, which arguably improved it because some stained glass was replaced with the plain glass Wren had originally specified.
I don't know much about the West Country, but could the answer be that the bridge did nothing?

Yes there is, it's a rail bridge and the next stop down the line is St Germans. Is this the 'German bombing' connection?
