I was thinking of 101 dalmations - Tim McInnerey is in it - there are 3 sequals, Hugh Laurie was in in one too so I thought Stephen Fry might have been.

So - Anything to do with bridges ? (I'm working on the French song now)

is it anything to do with Eton? Did Stephen Fry and Tim McInnerney both go there and is maybe the Eton boating song based on an old French folk tune?

Actually the clue in the title was what pointed me to Eton as Ian Fleming went there and so did Bond in the books, I also think Burgess or McLaine or one of those guys was an old Etonian. But it's obviously the wrong track so I will think again.

is Tolstoy involved in any way?

Hang on a minute, forget Tolstoy, I think Chekhov might be a better bet. There was a song we used to be forced to sing in French lessons in school called, I think, Alouette which had something to do with plucking the feathers from a bird of some kind, I thought it was a dove but could it have been a Seagull?
