Did somebody purloin his bones, possibly because he/she had an agenda of his/her own?

The Pope refused him a proper Christian burial, and centuries later he got one anyway?

Nope, not that.

So, in summary, he died in exile, in Ravenna, and never made it back to his hometown of Florence even in death. You seemed to like the idea that he was reburied in basically the same spot... thus, also in Ravenna? Do we need to guess the exact location, or perhaps the nature of his grave or tomb?

That's a perfect summary. smiley - ok

Exact location would be hard but no-one has quiet yet got either a location or the reason why he was moved but have all come close.

So I'll settle for a good enough description.

Was he dug up to be re-interred along with someone(s) who they didn't let him be buried with first time round?

Did someone dig him up, and they only found him much later and put him back where he was buried before?

He wasn't interred with anyone else.

He was however found much, much later (hence the 300 year gap).

Oops the Destroyer - not actually evil just very clumsy

"Was he buried with the woman (whose name escapes me) who he obsessed about and had quite unrequited love for and whom we often wrote about. She escorts him through heaven in the Divine Comedy for example?"

Beatrice
(thought I'd toss that in as I don't know the answer to the actual question)

He remained in Ravenna (and still is) but where in Ravenna? (nothing specific, the ground was a good - but wrong - guess generic palces will do.)

I went to Ravenna many years ago, but I don't remember seeing Dante's grave. There's a cemetery opposite the church.

Yes the tomb in Ravenna ( now contains his remain but even when the tomb was opened (for restoration) in 1782 the tomb was empty.

The question recall, is where were his remains in 1677?
