Keeping in mind the date - 1848 - and the fact that I'm looking for the *first* use of ferrocement, not just anything French that was ever built of concrete, it should be quite obvious that it's not the Maginot Line.

Not railway ties, coal bunkers, flooring, or swimming pools. (Though the latter would be handy for floating the boat, I suppose.)
As KB rightly says, he was a gardener, and the project is related to that.
Any more guesses as to the other one's job?
