A Conversation for Zen and the Art of Orange Peeling

If you bite your nails, using what's left of them to try and peel an orange is one of the most un-Zen like experiences imaginable.

I have the same problem which is why I always eat satsumas :>
A nice loose skin that can be pinched off with two fingers and can be eaten in an un-zen like hurry. The segments, that is, not the skin.

I tend not to use my fingernails at all, but attack the orange with a knife a la "Psycho" and slice it into quarters. I then sink my teeth into one of them, suck out the juice and tear away the flesh...not at all Zen.
Still, away from tackling awkwardly packaged fruit, I've just read your personal space and see that you're not only a fellow nail-biter but you studied at Leeds. Hurrah! That must make you one of the wisest people in Britain - either that or you just chose to go to the same University that I'm at now. Did you enjoy your time at Leeds? I'm having a great time - it's a fantastic Uni, it rocks. Did you have the honor of living in LS6 during some of your time there? If so, do you have any amusing anecdotes from that time? (never a dull moment there, as you know ).
Are you still living oop North? I have great admiration for anyone who can work in a call center. I wouldn't last five minutes, since I wouldn't be able to resist the temptation to *SLAP* my boss for telling me I needed to get through more calls...still, I hope you're boss is a very nice bloke and that you get on well with him (or her).
TTFN, Liz

hi Liz :> I seem to be bumping into quite a few ex Leeds students inclduing H2G2 dep editor Anna. In the three years I was there I lived at Boddington Hall (or Boddington Hell as it were), LS16 (Most noteable incident being a riot - came home one dark and rainy night to find lots of burning cars in the aftermath), and then the rather handy flat above the estate agents just opposite the Parkinson Steps.
I'm back in Doncaster now, a town of pubs and clothes shops.
Fortunately my call center is for customer servies rather than telesales so it's not that bad :>
Hmm better keep on topic. Oranges oranges oranges!

Hmm maybe it was LS6... is that the area just on the far side of Hyde Park, Bradford direction? Oranges.

Yes, there do seem to be rather a lot of us (ex)Leeds students around. I guess it just reflects what a great University it is. I know quite a few people who lived in Boddington. They told me it was a great place to live...providing you had tolerant taste buds. Apparently the food's awful!
I never had the pleasure of sampling halls food, as I lived in flats - Lupton Flats, to be precise (don't laugh - it wasn't that bad!). In my second year my plans to "live out" fell thru, so I ended up back in student accomadation, where I lived in St Mark's flats. However I was hardly ever there, as I met my boyfriend in early Nov that year and more or less lived in his house in Hyde Park from thereon. Here in Germany I'm also in University accomadation - compared to the places in England it's seriously palacial. My room is *huge* and it's all brand new. The University is also situated in one of the nicest areas of town, and since I'm living on campus (though I'm actually 15 mins walk away), I'm spending a year free of walking up to my ankles in trash and hearing strange "bumps" (or, to be precise, hot-wired cars) in the night.
LS6 covers Hyde Park itself, plus Headingley and Woodhouse Cliff.LS16 is quite a bit further out. What was the name of the newsagents you lived above? I can guarentee you it's still there now.
Well, I hope that after sampling the delights of student housing (or not, as the case may be), that you've now found yourself a really nice place to live in Doncaster.
I hope your job is going well too. Do you enjoy it? If so, what do you like about it especially?
Well, I'd better be off. Oh, yes, oranges, oranges, oranges. (Perhaps we should ask for an orange smiley!).
Get in touch soon - cheerio!
Lizzy

A friend confirmed that it was the LS16 area I was in during my third term :>
Can't remember the name of the estate agents but it's right opposite the Parkinson building steps. Window didn't shut properly. In winter woke up with snow on me. Boddington Hall isn't the best place to stay if you like peace and quiet. Even though I was in the 'quiet corridor' all-night parties tormented me every night. Everyone hated me there :> Oranges. Best memories of university: In my third term I was given a key so I could get into the computer labs in the middle of the night. Setting fire to my friend Ron's hair. Watching the kitchen worktop degenerate into an inch thick combo of dried noodles, candle wax and worse. Writing the word 'SPAM' in 10ft long letters in the snow in the pond area just outside the lecture hall. Going to 'The Black Logde' and moping around on the window cill.
Oranges.
My call center is a customer services office for a major DIY company, we take calls for all the stores in the region (from Stockton to Nottingham and everywhere inbetween) This mostly involves taking abuse from customers who have been promised callbacks from the store staff... Still preferable to working in sales :> Quite a small center, only about 15 people in at one time, quiet chummy.
Oranges... maybe we should just transfer the conversation to one of our researcher pages :>
What are you studying?

Let me know if you move this conversation! Perhaps we should set up a Leeds student/alumni page?
In the first year, I lived in North Hill Court (at the back of James Baillie flats) where I had the most fantastic room. I was supposed to be sharing, but my roomate to be didn't turn up and I got a double all to myself. It had a balcony and doors that opened out onto it! In the second year I lived in one of the Harolds (can't remember which one now, terrible, but it had a yellow and green door, and the end of the road was right opposite the Hyde Park Cinema - now there's a Entry waiting to be written, if ever there was one) in the most freezing conditions I have ever experienced. Cold, cold, cold. Brrrr! In the third year I lived on Hyde Park Road - it had central heating. Toasty!

Hyde Park Cimema was one of the nicest little buildings I've been
in. I saw the Wong Kar-Wai film 'Fallen Angels' there.
Very cute... still in business is it?
