Sometimes an amateur choral society makes better recordings than many professional ones

Up until 2020, I sang in an amateur choral society in my area. They will be on hiatus until at least Fall of 2021. That's a pity. They hire professional orchestras and soloists for all their concerts, and the director is extremely capable. (I sang with them almost continuously form 1981 through 2019, and now consider myself retired. Singing is a young person's activity unless you are Hugues Cuenod or Vera Lynn or Tony Bennett or Barbara Cook.)

Anyway, members of the chorus always got CD recordings of our concerts. These were not for sale to the general public, for reasons of copyright and the rights of the professionals that we hired.

I have at least ten CD's of past Christmas concerts. I treasure them. They are really good, a tribute to the imagination of our director and the talent of our choristers.

Right now I'm listening to the 2015 CD, which features an all-French lineup of composers.

Yes, it is impressive what can be achieved. My local choir is all volunteers, so they don't have the facility to make recordings, but they do put on lovely concerts when they get the chance. My partner's workplace choir had a subscription fee to pay for professional support, and they made some impressive recordings - I am lucky to have a couple of them.

When I reached puberty I volunteered for choir practice because that's were the girls where smiley - divasmiley - divasmiley - diva They were sitting opposite us boys smiley - bigeyes

But once we started singing I couldn't help but notice how good we sounded because we helped each other keep the smiley - musicalnote and pace.

In the end I even volunteered to sing in a church which had a nice acoustic smiley - smiley

Lutherans predominate in Denmark, so I'm guessing that your church was of that denomination. I've sung in Lutheran churches on occasion. I recall that congregations were warned against getting involved with the smiley - devil.. smiley - laugh

Most churches practice a very relaxed version of Lutheranism. For instance they allowed same sex marriages a few years after the first homosexuals were married at Danish town halls on 1 October 1989.

I am happy to hear that.

I know some gay couples who are really sweet people. How anyone could use the Bible to make them miserable, I don't know. I say this after having read from Genesis through Leviticus. Yes, God is quoted as promising bad results for gay people, but hardly anyone comes out well. And, all this dates back three or four thousand years, to societies that were so different from our own that only a few percent of modern people could follow what God is supposed to have ordered.

I wish I had read the new testament instead of the Old one, but the letters of Saint Paul sometimes rub me the wrong ay, too. And Revelations? They can (and often are) be interpreted in so many different ways as to be almost useless as a guide for daily life.

what do I like about the Bible? In the King James version, it is elegant. Set to music by the best composers, it can move me immensely. I can't help reading the Bible with an open mind. I was taught to do so by the minister of the church I went to for 16 years. He had been headmaster of a private school before going into the ministry.

He encouraged young people to use their minds for critical thinking.
