paulh, vaccinated against the Omigod Variant

I have learned my lesson about not linking to outside sites without permission from the thread's originator.

But I'm here, and I've come back.

Some day I will get things right, and I'm inching toward that day. The past cannot be corrected. The future is a mystery. But the here and now is where I can have an impact, whether large or small. smiley - smiley

I ran into some trouble with a researcher who didn't want me to link outside this site, in his threads.

Thank you for asking me to link in my own threads. I will be happy to do so. smiley - winkeye

Paul, just to be clear. Topic drifts and crazy links are fine - look at the inspiration you provided with the chicken comment.

I simply requested that if you're commenting on a story or photo, don't post links to other stuff, My pet hate, not a rule, not a regulation, just a personal request.

General chats fair game, just look at cactus cafe threads, great stuff.

Hope this clears things up. smiley - hug

Pierre, this may be my thread, but it is a response to something in the Post that the other researcher submitted, so he considers it *his* thread in a way. I intend to get around this by creating journals or guide entries that are mine, putting outside links in them, and then linking to those journals or entries when I want to reference an outside source.

Remember when the U.S. tried to have diplomatic relations with both Communist China and Taiwan? Just call me Henry Kissinger. smiley - biggrin

The bottom line, in my view, is that it's hard to discuss things at allthoroughly given only the resources of H2G2. So, let's not be thorough.

Or we can let this thread die, though it seems to keep going. smiley - smiley

Pierce, this may be my journal, but material was moved here from this other thread: http://h2g2.com/dna/h2g2/alabaster/F22171150?thread=8325667&latest=1 where it was problematic to give links outside H2G2. The world I would like to live in does not exist, so I am left living in the world that does exist. The immovable object and the irresistible force coexist, or have to seem to do so. Just like the two Chinas. I am letting it spur me to creative solutions. You can join me in this, Pierre. :-) All are welcome.

Aha, now I understand. Well, a little better at least smiley - winkeye
I can well understand the call not to link to anything outside this site but to write an entry instead.
But Paulh has a good point: You can not verify statements by writing an entry yourself.
Furthermore, I think it will benefit h2g2 more in the long run if we open up to other sites. In particular if we are able to refer from there to h2g2.
It is utopia to think that we will get somewhere if we lock ourselves off from the outer World. No site can achieve that today - and it will not get better.
(It's something else with newspapers on the internet. They have to have payment walls. How else be able to pay the staff? By only being dependent on advertisers? I don't think that's healthy. But let that be a discussion in another thread.)
Deciphering abbreviations is not always easy. What does MVP and PR stand for?
I have noticed that FWR prefers not to link to anything outside h2g2 and will try to remember it in their threads.
I also noticed that there seems to have been a lot of smiley - simpostsmiley - simpost in this thread nine hours ago. Correct me if I am wrong.
And have a nice day smiley - smiley

I see both points of view, and respect them.

There are some gardening or horticulture topics that I could write entris about with little or no outside help. The catch is that a guide entry is not supposed to use the word "I" too much.

But a conversation is different from an authoritative guide entry.

And some entries are well-nigh impossible to write without going outside H2G2: when no one else at H2G2 has written entries that you can link to. Yes, the Battle of Hastings is covered, as are wedding and photography topics. And, you can make the generalization that some web sites offer free hosting. I have noticed this myself over the last 25 years.

But I am breaking new ground when I write about plants that have not been covered elsewhere at h2G2. Trust me, I got cross-eyed finding h2G2 information about spruces and non-medical used for Echinacea/Coneflowers. Something's got to give sometimes.

And, I think that some very w3ise people want me to write material that is new to the site. I don't have other researchers lining up to collaborate. I'm willing to strike out in new directions and be a leader. But leaders do appreciate support. I say that in the nicest way possible. smiley - smiley

I'm open to suggestions as to how my three entries in Peer Review could have been written differently so as to minimize links. The comments I've received so far have been quite reasonable, and I have made some adjustments based on them.

Speaking of links to the outside world:
There is quite a list of groups related to Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy on Facebook. And some elsewhere on the net as well. First and foremost Douglas Adams' own h2g2.com of course.
Thought you might find them interesting. Please add others in the comments.

My head is spinning after going to each of those links.

Admirers of Douglas Adams might do well to remember that Digital Village was the company Adams started before he died, and it directly spawned H2G2.com

Faceboook has more bells and whistles, though. I can understand the attraction, but we are a working site. We do more than just socialize. We produce works of fiction, works of non fiction, and a weekly newspaper (The Post).

Pierce, have you ever read The Post?

Of course. I have even contributed to it. It's where I told people of the launching of the good ship The Blood Of The Zaphodistas. One of my poems was also published there.

I didn't notice that at first.

You mentioned another group twice, as well.

I didn't notice that either.

But maybe more sank in the second time I read the link. smiley - smiley
