Exceptions to Free Admission at Smithsonian

There are two branches of the Smithsonian that aren't free - one old and one new. The old one is the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, located on Museum Mile in New York City. This is among my favorite museums, with a wonderful collection. But following recent administrative turmoil, it hiked its admission to $10 ($7 for students, elderly, disabled).
The new one is Udvar-Hazy Center of the National Air and Space Museum, which is located at Dulles International Airport and includes such significant artifacts as the Enola Gay and the Boeing 707 prototype. In theory, this museum doesn't charge admission - but that's pretty deceptive, because it appears to be impossible to get there without paying rather a bit. The choice is either $12 to park (at least you can cram more people into one vehicle), or taking a $7 per person shuttle from the main Air and Space building on the Mall.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
