here are a couple of solutions:

Santa Claus is a character in Rupert Heard's
play, "Scotty's Big Christmas."

The Prince Rupert (British Columbia)
Public Library has several Christmas
books, including "Auntie Claus." The
title character is Santa Claus's sister.

How about Rupert was a good boy last year so he got a visit from Santa?

Hope your holidays were great Paul!

I've only heard 8 of the songs on the
list, Elwood. If I entered (as a guinea
pig?), I'd be making wild guesses most
of the time.

How about Layla - Eric Clapton vs. Bridge over troubled water - Paul Simon?

Sorry, I don't know "Layla."

The other one seems to be everywhere
these days smiley - winkeye. I hear "Bridge over
Troubled Water" in the supermarket quite
often.

The others that I've heard are:

Satisfaction (Mick Jagger)
Brick in the Wall (Pink Floyd)
Good vibrations (Beach Boys)
Imagine (Lennon?), which I only ever heard once
Hey, Jude
2 others that I can't think of now

If the list had included any prime Sha na na
or Everly Brothers material, I'd feel more confident.

Things like "Teenager in Love," "Book of Love,"
"I Need your love" (used in the movie "Ghost"),
"Put your head on my shoulder", "Surfin' USA"
(a Beach Boys song used in the film "Teen wolf"),
"Venus", "Copacabana," "Knock three times,"
"You light up my life." I've sung some of the
above songs in an outreach group that I'm in.
We did a Beach Boys medley, a Seventies medley,
and "Mr. Sandman."

No two people are familiar with the same pop songs.
There are just too many, spread across decades
and wildly divergent styles. I get unbelievably
nostalgic when I hear "Put your head on my
shoulder." I'm just a grumpy old man, I guess,
but it doesn't seem as if they're still writing
songs like that any more. smiley - blue

Well pop by the tourney every once in a while and see if a song your rooting for is still in the hunt!

Elwood, I surprise myself sometimes
with the depth of my passion for some
of the pop songs I grew up with.
Even the theme songs for some TV game shows
bring me back to my childhood, when I
didn't have any responsibilities, and
I felt safe and loved. The world was
opening up for me, and I could dream
about growing up to do exciting things.

Like possibly growing up to be a gameshow theme song writer.

Yeah. What you said about music is one of the great things that it does for people and part of why I did the tournament. Because I believe it has done the same for people all over the world. So I tried to get a good cross-section, but that's difficult with the age span at h2g2.
