Probably the most dire event in H2G2's history was the 46-day period (which some claim was actually 42) from January 25 to March 13, 2001,when the site was closed down pending transfer to the BBC. In retrospect, this period was called "Rupert." Why "Rupert?" Well, just because. (For more info, see http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/F63270?thread=100604) Some claim that the period resembled a planet by that name (Mentioned in one of the HHGTTG books) beyond the orbit of Pluto. But we mustn't let the issue rest there. Because of the interconnectness of all things, Rupert is relevant to everything in the universe--usually in no more than six degrees of linkage. For instance: Rupert can be linked to Judy Garland in the following way: 1. Rupert is the name of a city in British Columbia, also known as "City of rainbows." 2. Rainbows are linked to the film "Wizard of Oz" because of the song "Over the rainbow." 3. "Over the rainbow" was Judy Garland's most famous song. Second example: Rupert can be linked to dead parrots: 1. Rupert was the name of a German Prince who was the nephew of Charles I of England. He came to England and fought on the side of the Crown during the mid-17th century. 2. Since then, England has created the BBC (YAY!) 3. In the early 1970's, the BBC broadcast a comedy series called "Monty Python's Flying Circus." 4. One of the episodes of MPFC had a sketch about an unscrupuous pet-store owner who tried to sell John Cleese a dead parrot (the NERVE of some people! :-( ) A live parrot might take one or two more links to get to, but not more than 6 altogether :-) There are obviously lots of other ways in which Rupert can be linked to all points in the universe. The rest of this thread will be devoted to finding them. Okay, ready, set, GO!

Question: Is there a link between Rupert and pennies?

Answer:

Quite a few. The most direct is as follows:

Step 1: Rupert is the first name of Rupert Murdoch, the owner of a
Large media empire.

Step 2: One of Murdoch's holdings is the New York Post.

Step 3: It costs rather a few pennies to buy a copy of the New York Post : - )

A more amusing solution:

Step 1: "Rupert" is derived from "Robert."

Step 2: "Robert" was the stage name adopted by Leslie Townes Hope, a.k.a.
Bob Hope

Step 3: Bob Hope was in a number of "Road" movies with Bing Crosby

Step 4: Bing Crosby recorded a song called "Did you ever see a dream walking?"

Step 5: "Did you ever see a dream walking" was used as part of the soundtrack
In the Steve Martin/Bernadette Peter film "Pennies from heaven"

It would have been amusing if there had been a Hurricane Rupert that had
Done severla billion dollars' damage somewhere (that would be a LOT
of pennies), but 'twas not to be. Or, going farther afield, it might have
been fun to see if J. C. Penney's (a chain of apparel stores in the U.S.)
had opened in Prince Rupert (a city in British Columbia).

Ah, well, on to the next challenge : - )

"You're obviously insane."

Sanity is overrated smiley - cool

(Let's see, the links between sanity
and Rupert are as follows:

1. Sanity is what psychiatrists attempt
to lead their patients to.

2. Bob Newhart played a psychiatrist
on television in the 1970s.

3. "Bob" is a nickname for "Robert"

4. A name that has been derived from
"Robert" is, of course, "Rupert."

Take care smiley - smiley )

U.S. Patent 4,623,551 to Claude Giddey and Georges Dové:
Method for the Fabrication of a Cheese Foam

There are several ways to proceed. Probably the strongest set
of links is:
1. Cheese is the key ingredient in cheese foam.
2. Cheese is a dairy product
3. C. Robert Dove is a member of the Univ. of GA Animal and Dairy Science Faculty
in Tifton, Georgia.
4a. Rupert is a variation on the name "Robert"
4b. Robert Dove and Georges Dove have the same surname ("Dove"),
as well as a common interest in dairy-related issues. Is it too farfetched
to think that they might be related?

A second set of links is:

1. Cheese is the key ingredient in cheese foam.
2. Kraft Cheese Company (J.L. Kraft, founder) is one of the
leading makers of cheese in the U.S.
3. J.L. Kraft was a key backer in the development of the
Redfish Lake Lodge in Idaho.
4. Development of the Redfish Lake Lodge was the idea
of Robert W. Limbert (1885-1933), a prominent naturalist,
photographer, and outdoorsman
5. "Rupert" is a variation on the name "Robert"

Other paths of inquiry would involve the U.S. Patent Office,
which surely contain a lot of men named Robert (or
women named Roberta), and maybe even one or
two Ruperts! Unfortunately, searching their site
requires software that I don't have and can't get
at this time.

might I suggest also:

1 Rupert is the name of a well know cartoon bear
2 Paddington is a further well know bear
3 Paddinton is also a minline station in London
4 One may take a direct train from Paddington to Adlington in Cheshire (approx 4 hrs)
5 Cheshire is a popular vareity of cheese
6 Cheese is a key ingredient in cheese foam

Oh, Casanunda, this is an easy one! smiley - biggrin

1. Rupert Murdoch owns the Fox Family Channel

2. According to the BBC, in 1998/9, Thomas the
Tank Engine was adapted for television, to be
shown on that channel. For what it's worth,
Shepperton Studios was named as the location
where it was produced.

Have a nice day smiley - smiley

(Apparently, there are ways of linking TTTE
to Rupert by going through Paddington Bear,
but it would be too easy to go that route
again any time soon...)

Not that it matter a lot, but I have a "Six degrees of Rupert"
thread going on at my personal space.
"Rupert" was the name given to the period when
H2G2 was down, awaiting its resurrection by the BBC.

The links from Rupert to Kevin Bacon are as follows:

1. "Rupert" is the first name of actor Rupert Everett
2. Rupert Everett was in the film "Pret a Porter" (aka "Ready to wear"),
which also featured the actress Tracy Ullmann.
3. Tracy Ullmann had her own televsion show ("The Tracy Ullmann
Show"), which co-starred Julie Kavner
4. Julie Kavner was in the film "Hannah and her sisters,"
which also starred Daniel Stern.
5.Daniel Stern was in the film "Diner" with Kevin Bacon
