I've enjoyed all the movies, even the new one. They all have things that don't seem to fit in all that well. I really thought the virgin birth thing was dumb, unnecisairy, and a rip off of christianity. The movie overall was great fun.

I quite liked Jar-Jar. He's probably the most often quoted charater in my circle of friends.

I shall leave with this one thought: When Darth Vader says, "As you wish," to Grand Moff Tarkin, does he really mean, "I love you"?

bout the virgin birth:
when i first saw episode I i felt it was a cheap rip-off.. but when i thought about it, it really was in keeping with the rest of the thought behind star wars.. It is supposed to incorporate major epic myths. and along the lines of the: "it's okay to make linux look like windows, because windows was made to look like macOS"; "it's okay to steal the virgin birth idea from christianity, because christianity stole it from earlier pagan cults." [the socratic assumption that "macOS is a pagan cult" was not implied.]

so, after some thought (albeit convoluted) it doesn't bother me anymore

IMHO it's the 20th century equivalent of "Four score and seven years ago.."

I thought it's too closely associated with the story of Jesus.

I have to admit, that kinda bothered me a bit too ... after reading the novelization, I accepted it a bit more. Too bad it wasn't explained as well in the film.

Now - after what? two weeks - I suddenly remember three of my absolut favoutite quotes. Quotes I sometimes even use - always getting the usual "what-is-that-girl-babbling-about" look.

"Yes Master!" (MUST be done in a Vaderesque voice or people will get you SERIOUSLY wrong! )

"NooOOooOOooOOooOOooOOooOO" (Luke when Obi-Wan dies or Obi-Wan when Qui-Gon dies. Great to use for error messages. Much better than the usual Windows wav file!!!)

"I find your lack of faith disturbing!" (I don't have to comment on that one, do I?! )

That is: "I find your faith of Lack disturbing!"
Lack in German means patent leather.

I suspect a lot of people's problem with Episode 1 is because they were young when they saw the first 3, and much older when they saw this one. I noticed that the young people in the cinema around me were entranced. Considering the way people loved the original series, I can not imagine anything that could have really lived up to (i.e. topped) them in most minds. The only thing that kind of struck me as odd in Ep 1 was the way the robotic soldiers were so easily mowed down anytime they were called upon. EVERYBODY beat them and shattered them no matter how many robots there were or how weak their opponent. I kept thinking why would these warleaders bother with them? I liked Jar-Jar fine and agree with later folks in this thread who point out that he was no more cartoon-y than the beloved R2D2 or C3PO.
To me the main thing missing in Ep 1, compared with the others was the sense of amateur fighters (Han, Luke and Leia) overcoming all those odds - Liam and Ewan were just too professional;- and I loved the constant teen-age style scrapping between Luke and Leia and her sort of gawky ungraciousness (e.g. "Some rescue!") as opposed to the cool skills of Amidala.
