Being decades out of practice I was flabergasted to find that (1+7)+(9*4)+SQRT(9)-(5) does indeed = 42, and I find myself delighted to have a legitamate identity 5 years younger than I am, and so am completely unable to concentrate enough to find another solution with out a sqrt!
Words cannot express my gratitude...
Cheers

I only recently got round to doing mine, which turns out to be very easy (standard functions and no numbers put together):
1 + (2x5x4) - 8 + 9 = 42! (link to page would be nice)

What's the point of the brackets?
Personally I think putting 1 and 7 together to make 17 is cheating... :-p

Argon0 (50 and feeling it - back for a bit) Posted Jul 5, 2001
Its allowed in the Rules..... Although I'm fairly sure you could do that one without using 17...
Hmmm...
171717 = 1*7*1*7*1 - 7 = 42

I congratulate you on reworking a mess by someone who found simple mathematics completely impossible that day
Note. the brackets were used to make it look more intelligent
