i am a new user, i have just arrived. i came from a land called napster. they have problems of censorship there too. i am sure u are aware of this. it certainly isnt a new problem and it isnt ever going to go away, not for a long while i wouldnt have thought. it will be interesting and, i hope, not too horific, to see just what we all end up with as regards world wide standards in the near future (in the english speaking parts at least).
when i write, i want to know that i can use any word in my vocabulary, which isnt that many. i would like to know that i have the freedom to discuss whatever subject i am interested in.
a few 'brainstorming' questions:
can the bbc not affiliate itself with this website in another way (sponsor it or something) thus reducing their liability? do they have to own it?
does it make any legal difference that the medium of the internet is not a broadcast medium? it isnt an extention of the telly/film or the wireless, it is based on the telephone, which is uncensored. does this help in any way?
is there a way of haveing an area that is for 'mature members'(ooer) Though i'm not too fond of this idea, mind you, we could reverse it and have a kiddy gloves zone for the 'morally insecure'?
could it not be classed as an artistic experiment and thus aviod the issue entirely? (well, madam im sorry u don't like our 'piss christ' (wee, wee christ) exhibit, but its a work of bleedin' art ma'am, if u'll forgive my french)

im not too sure how long i'll stay if i cant let loose the odd expletive, call me mildly tourettic, but i actually enjoy swearing, i find it helps.
i like that illusion of freedom that a censorshipless state can evoke. i also dont think that most of the people here are all that interested in slagging people off or being abusive to each other or their readers. i think the bbc'll find that a little faith in the type of viewers this sort of project will attract would not go amiss.
it appears to me that those at the beeb will implement these restrictions as a matter of GENERAL policy. they immediatly take the most easily offended person as a role model and then try to please them. this seems a bit unnesecary here. an impulse decision, please, dont panic?

I'm not above a bit of swearing either, but most of the time it is either not necessary, or actively detracts from the discussion. smiley - tongueout

you answered yourself there really, '..most of the time...' what about the time when it is nesecarry or doesn't detract from the conversation? that's my point really. liberty. and what about the other points? ( 'cheifwhat' goes of to sulk quietly in a corner 'cos he feels people aren't paying him ENOUGH attention).
