A Conversation for Are We too Sentimental about Animals?

When has Sentimentality Gone Too Far?

I think it's okay to be loving to animals, and I think those who purposely torture and mistreat animals for no reason are sick. However, I don't think it's healthy to put animals over humans.

I've heard stories of housing projects that were going to be built but weren't because of some kind of endangered insect that had its home where the lot was. Instead of providing people with shelter, we let some bugs live.

Although I'm a vegetarian, I think that killing animals for food is fine - as long as the animals are butchered efficiently, etc. I don't believe that we should be wasting cheap food supply to fatten cows instead of giving that food to the poor, but I think people should be allowed to eat meat and I'm not going to interfere with that.

Most importantly, I'm a Christian (which seems to have no relevance on this site, but oh well) and believe in the verse of the Bible that said God gave humans power over the animals. Animals have rights, but sometimes those rights have to be sacrificed for the good of humans.

Just wondering, do you think the God you believe in would be happy to have humans drive other species into extinction? Christians think the God they believe in created everything so don't you suppose he'd be a bit upset to have us actually exterminate a whole species? I would imagine that if such an entity existed, it'd be pretty majorly hacked off about that.

Yes, I think God would be pretty p**sed. But I think there's a difference between if we made the bald eagle go extinct and if we made a rare type of beetle go extinct.

Any particular reason for believing that?

Perhaps somewhere along the food chain, the eagle may be indirectly dependent upon that species of beetle.
