My dad said yesterday that when he was a boy - in the 1930s - his father would always use the old 'Look out the window! It's snowing!' on April 1st. A tradition my father carried on when I and my sisters were small. It won't work this year as we've had unthawed snow lying for weeks now.
Dad's other simple trick was to shout out that our pet rabbit had escaped, causing us to run outside to try to catch her. 
Mind you she did escape a lot...
