Hi everyone. This is truly one of the most unique websites that I have come across. Although I must admit that I stumbled upon this webpage as an accident due to my love of DNA's work. Once I read what it was all about I was just like.. wow why didnt anyone think of something like this before? This is truly one of the greatest sites on the internet due to it's collection of real information. I feel it is a global collective of minds and is a great asset to the internet community. It's really something special. A chance to really share you thoughts and idea's with the world. I would like to thank everyone who made this possible.

Glad you like it, and yes what you say does seem to sum it up. And many of us old hands consider a lot of the other researchers as friends and like to party between adding info to the guide as well. I'm sure as you move around you'll see what I mean.
Welcome to the gang and ope to see some of your wisdom shared in the near future.

Hi Guys,
I've just come on board. A quick question though, can I differentiate between those inputs and advice which are from experts and those which are from more informed people like me! Just so I know who I'm discussing things with.
Cheers

OK the experts apart from those who know a thing or two ot the Main team who are in bold italics are either volenteer ACEs or Sub Eds. You can find a whole list of who is who here http://www.h2g2.com/A132986
However almost anyone who stops by to give you advice is probably someone who know a little about this site anyway.

So where do the articles come from. Has whoever runs this place bought an encyclopedia or something? And if so, how come it's free? And lijke how do you get those funky little yellow smiely things?

The idea is that you write articles about whatever you feel able to. Or at least that's the theory. Most of us spend more time in the bar than actually writing anything. Which is very like the real Hitch-hiker's Guide, when you think about it.
The yellow smilies generate themselves automatically if you type in the characters in a text entry:
is : - )
is ; - )
etc.
As to how come it's free, I guess it has something to do with the adverts at the top of the pages, but what do I know about e-commerce?

I should be able to write something on e-commerce at least from the government side it's what I've done over the last few months.
Well not personally but I did proof read the document.
