In my experience public houses in rural area tend to go quite as soon as a non local enters the establishment.
There perhaps you should have a sub committee for "Not getting many strangers round here"
Perhaps have a rota of people to suddenly go silent, and then some one in the background who can cough during the silence.
Tumble weed can then roll past on que.
