I understand that both Al Gore and George "Dubyah" Bush wear bracelets inscribed with "WWJD" ("What Would Jesus Do?"). In Dubyah's case, I presume he has a pastor on hand to tell him, as he appears to be the first presidential candidate in history to openly outsource all his thinking ((c) G Trudeau).
In the case of capital punishment, however, the answer is clear and explicit. Faced with a death warrant, Jesus would emphatically not sign it.

I certainly concur with your assessment of Jesus' views on capital punishment. Fortunately, I don't have a lot of faith in Misters Gore and Bush (Senior or Junior).
I happen to believe that societies have some rights in deciding whether or not they want capital punishment. One thing cannot be denied, anyone who has been executed is unlikely to ever prey upon another defenseless person again.
