I'm trying to recycle an OLD 386 and can't get any version of Linux I have to load with only 1M of memory.

DON'T try tom's root boot. as it takes 1.7mb of floppy disk, and uncompresses onto ramdisks, it won't load into one of my machines with 10mb of memory.
there are numerous other tiny distributions out there. try searching google for "small linux".
