Here's a sonnet - albeit a bad one: http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/F48949?thread=121349 You are right indeed - 14 lines, iambic pentameter - that is ten syllables per line (or thereabouts), often divided into an octave and sestet. Iambic meter is alternate soft and hard stresses.
