Greetings, researcher 189663 - and welcome to h2g2!
First of all I suggest that you write something on your user page by clicking on the 'Edit' button - anything will do, like just simply saying 'hi!'...
...once you've done that people will be able to drop in and visit you - and there are a lot of helpful people around!

Hi new user!
Now, you'll be glad to hear h2g2 is fiendishly easy to use, although the first few times can be daunting!
First up, try these links out for size. This one is the Welcome tour, and you can find it at http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/Welcome. It basically acquaints you with the site and answers your queries. Also, try the How Do I? page at http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/HowDoI, which is kinda like an FAQ.
Want to know how to do some smileys? Try http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/A155909.
And last, but not least, to make life easier for you, if you click on my name above it takes you to my own Personal Space, where I've set up some more useful links, such as how to do Smileys and GuideML. Any more questions? Don't Panic! Just reply to this message and I'll be more than happy to help!

Hi Researcher 194294,
I can definitely recommend you click "Edit Page" and write a short intro about yourself. This way, people will be able to visit your pagee and help you with any questions you might have about the site.

The next step really, once you've built your own page, is to decide what you want to do. Are there topics you feel you know lots about? Are there topics you don't know much about but would like to learn?
At the top of the page, you can search topics that might be on h2g2. If there are any that catch your eye, click on them and join in the discussions or start a new one. That's possibly the best way to get to know the different personalities on here.
Welcome aboard all new-comers, have fun!
Jimster
