A quick hello from broe

I thought that subject line would catch everyone's attention, those of you who haven't given up yet and are still subscribed to my journal.
But it is just that, a quick hello. It's late and I have to get to bed, but I couldn't stay away a minute longer - I miss this place SO MUCH!
I am really excited to hear about the Presidential Meet-Up in July, and wild horses (and other RL commitments) couldn't keep me away. I'm looking forward to finally getting to go to one. Anyone who hasn't heard about this and is interested, there's a link in my message centre on my page, but I don't have it handy right now.
Hope you're all doing FAB, and once again, I'll promise to try to come by a bit more often. Promise. Really, I will.
and to you all! (even you, elwood.)

It's always the cocktail hour somewhere.
Parrferris!
I had just noticed tonight elly's thread wondering where everyone was and was surprised at all the people who've been missing lately. Glad to see everyone around, though!

So, are you locked in right now broe?

No, I'm home for a few days. I shouldn't have to be locked in anymore, but when I go back on Friday I don't get any more regular days off, just random days here and there, one at a time.

Yeah, I'm sort of having a week like that. It's South by Southwest time and Austin is full of fuzzy little foreigners buying up all the crappy country music that no-one around these parts would give houseroom
Can American employers do that? I mean, just say 'You're going to work 12 hours a day seven days a week and you'll only get a day off when we fancy giving you one' (if you'll pardon the expression )? Sounds a bit dodgy to me, but then I've come to know about dodgy pactices over the past year

I think that unless you belong to a union, or have a signed contract stating otherwise, employers can do pretty much anything they want.
I found this from the US Dept. of Labor, you might like to check it out:

Yeah, I think Shea's right, so long as they're paying me they can dictate whatever schedule they like. And that page was very informative, Shea, thanks!
One of the problems we're experiencing is that our facility hasn't had a strike in about 30 years. Very few employees from then are still around from then - and I'd wager the ones that are are mostly union. The company that owns us now doesn't own any other union facilities, so there wasn't a protocol in place for dealing with a work stoppage. I'm thinking some of their plans are over-precautionary, and as soon as they realise this I'm hoping to be back to something that resembles a normal schedule.
Right now, when I go back to work I don't know when I'll get another day off. I'm hoping that by the time I go back there will be some sort of schedule in place. Working 12 hours a day is physically exhausting - even if I'm not doing any kind of manual labor - but not knowing when a break will come will be even more mentally exhausting.
