Milla, h2g2 Operations Started conversation Nov 19, 2007
I'm soooooo frustrated, that I have finally given up.
We've let the project manager know, since half a year, that all the environments installed with the new system have problems.
We've asked again and again to get them resolved. We've offered to help, and have helped, and investigated, and managed vendor contacts and generally gone out of our way to get the systems in order.
But a few weeks ago, we were pretty much told to keep our sticky fingers away, and just make sure the test scripts were in order, so that testing could begin today.
The IS department would deliver complete and functioning systems by today.
Have they, do you think?

Bugg'rit.
Well. I was right.
The system is in such a state that we can not go live with it.
It's hardly in testable state, at least two key components need replacing.
And I was also right, when I said that our health is more important than the system going live, and that going live with a usable system is more important than hitting the deadline.
So. One step at the time, we are now documenting the faults. We will need about a month to get the corrections, and another few weeks to test them.
But did the Project Leader listen to me and my colleague?

Of course not - see, the people who create the systems aren't the ones who are going to use it, so they completely overlook any user friendly aspects.
One of the most obvious examples are the differences between MS Word and MS Excel - hey, they don't even share the same colour palette!
Excel seems to have been constructed by someone with at least a basic knowledge of what users would want - but Word is just a complete disaster, especially if you're trying to write a manual with print screens inserted!
Word reformatting my text into a different font, making headlines out of ordinary text, changing font size, refusing to insert pics where I want them.... and it's just guesswork, because I certainly didn't ask it to try to guess my intentions! *grits teeth*

Ah, yes, the noble art of Word Programming... imposing your will on the document against the will of the software. It has eluded me many times.
For screenshots, may I recommend SnagIt. It lets you copy just the right part of the image, and puts it in Clipboard. Then it is (fairly) easily pasted into word. Assuming you know how to format the image to postion and framing and so on...

oh dear
and when you copy paste them into a newspaper publishing system it goes *totally* heywire
often enough i have to correct the stuff not only line by line, but word by word
an i'm not even talking of proof reading

My boss is female. She's great, but complains bitterly about the odd botty burp. Us chaps are never bothered by the occassional parp, why do they go into one so?

Hello, norti, nice to see you!
You know, "the occasional parp" would be a whiff of fresh air at work these days...
Wish me luck, I've an interview for a job as Global Business Analyst tomorrow, at a quite different company than my current.
