Well, that was stupid

I'm sitting here in the local library on a computer (you probably guessed I was on the computer). I needed to get a file from my floppy disk, so I reached down and pushed it into the computer. It didn't make the usual clicking noise of a disk going into a disk drive, so I looked and I have in fact pushed it into the gap between the DVD drive and the floppy drive. I tried to push it out with a ruler, but it just dropped down from the plastic bit at the front on to the top of the floppy drive proper. They said they'll get an engineer out urgently, which hopefully means Monday.

But you knew what you did, Rich
I only wonder why Bagpuss didn't take a screw driver, opened the casing of the PC and removed the floppy disk wit a pair of tweezers ?

That's just what we need, Bagpuss. Floppy disks in the wrong places resulting in patrons dismantling our equipment with screwdrivers.
If it's any consolation, you certainly aren't the first person to do that. It doesn't happen as often as it used to, however. For one thing, many of th epeople who lose their diskettes in the computers are afraid to ever come back. I do have a rather fierce over the glasses glare and no one does the disgusted librarian deep sigh better than I do.

Amen to what Hyp said! She has mastered the over the glasses glare.
However, Bagpuss, your dilemma provided a bright spot for my day. Thank you very much.

Bel - quite apart from the possible reactions of librarians if I were to dismantle a PC in full view of the front desk, they keep the PCs in cages, making access tricky (some of them have bars almost in front of the disc drives), and I didn't have a screwdriver on me anyhow.

Ok, I had no idea they keep the PCs in cages , can you tell I've never been at a PC in our library ( or elsewhere, for that matter).

Hypatia Posted Sep 16, 2006
We don't have our PCs in cages, Bel. But we do frown upon the patrons dismantling them.
We have some patrons I'd like to put in cages.

Yes, ok, maybe they'd better ask for a screwdriver and 'officially' dismatle them, under surveillance, or have the librarian dismatle them ? I mean, i's just two screws, can't be all that difficult, can it ?

Oh, and my keyboard picks another letter it refuses to type every time, mostly, it's the os , not the ns

No more difficult than getting the diskette in the right slot in the first place.

The librarians didn't want to mess with the computers themselves, so I don't think they'd have let me do it. It's an engineer's job apparently.

My computer doesn't even have a slot for floppy discs. Are you sure there was a slot for them in the library computer?
