Why don't they just close the site?
Titania (gone for lunch) Posted Sep 8, 2003
I thought I was - but it's happened to me before that I've found myself 'unsubscribed' from entries that I *know* I have subscribed to!

I did get the announcement but haven't understood why you were waiting for this
I've seen the odd Italic move on recently but other than that I've not noticed much. I don't get the chance to hootoo much anymore mind you so I haven't exactly had my ear to the ground.
What led you to suspect this was going to happen?

Maybe "waiting" isn't the right word, but I'm certainly not surprised.
I can't really say why, just a feeling.
But as you asked, here are some of the things that haven't made me *too* happy with BBC lately:
It sure doesn't help me to feel positive, that the servers are so slow that I've had to use 40 minutes to come up with just part of the answer. Even though DNA just had new servers (see Jim Lynn's journal), the performance is so bad that it's hard to believe the Beeb (outside the DNA teams!) care at all.
This is a typical situation:
F47996?thread=314661&skip=17&show=1
And look at the line they recently added to their (secret) feedback page:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/support/trace.html
"The odd Italic move on"
- well, Anna has left and both Ashley and Abi has *almost* left. (though Ashley have been back for a few days now before going on this "holiday".
That's about half of the staff - and it's only what we see.
Policy:
The last months several edited entries have disappeared after the BBC Editorial Policy started telling the team that the House Rules wasn't to be read as everybody always have read the house rules. There's way too much to say about that than I've got time and energy for now, but the way this and other things have been handled the last months is a disgrace for what used to be a magic place on the net.
And then there's of course the review The BBC's Online Servic. No more comments for now...

Hm. Would we be better off if the BBC sold h2g2?
and if yes: are we enough people to buy it from them and guarantee its future?
To a strong and good h2g2!

I expect that the BBC paid quite a bit for H2G2, and they
wouldn't want their constituents to think they threw good
money down the drain. Of course, so much work is done by
volunteers, it must have seemed like a bargain to them
at the time.

I doubt that much money changed hands when BBC acquired h2g2. Hootoo was not self supporting. The beeb rescued it and its employees.

Then there's a chance that all my beautiful wickedness
might someday just cease to be recorded? Oh, what a world,
what a world.

The end of the world really is coming, it's just
late like everything else.
But, no, this is not the end, though we might be able to
see it from here.

Ottox Posted Sep 11, 2003
I certainly don't see this as the end of the world! But I see it as yet another down for h2g2. I honestly don't think there's much fun about the site anymore.
And *that* makes me sad because I do love this place.

Look on bright side, Ottox.
In order to close the site down, it would have
to be running. But, as we all know, all too frequently
nowadays nobody can get on for any purpose.
So, if it's not running, it can't be closed down.
