I think the reason this thread has lasted as long as it has is the total freedom we have in regard to time; but yes, sometimes it takes a while to get an answer and sometimes it takes a while for the right answer to be recognised; but the worst cases are when the winner doesn't come back to post a new one. Time limits are certainly a talking point.
Discuss.
smiley - biggrin

And my answer is Picasso ..if only because he was probably in the neighborhood and was known for doing arty stuff.

The Ghost of Polidari

We have a winner!

Well, I didn't think anyone would get that one quite so quickly - the answer was Laurie Lee, author of Cider with Rosie. The people described above were named in 'A Rose In Winter'.

Well done Granny Weatherwax! Over to you...

Oooh crikey, that WAS a lucky guess....... Right here goes...

Born on the fringes of high society, although her mother was not British, two Georges figured in her rise to fame

Another guess: Daphne du Maurier

Daphne du Maurier was born in London. She came from an artistic family. Her father was the actor-manager Sir Gerald du Maurier and she was the granddaughter of caricaturist George du Maurier. One of her ancestors was Mary Anne Clarke, the mistress of the duke of York, second son of King George III. She later became the heroine of du Maurier's novel MARY ANNE (1954). In 1831 Mary Anne Clarke's daughter married Louis-Mathurin Busson du Maurier.
