Titania (gone for lunch)

I've never paid much attention to them, since I've associated them with FB, which I'm boycotting (most of the time) for a number of reasons.

Lately, I've spent some time following the postings on a Swedish LCHF (LowCarbHighFat) forum and noticed that there is a 'like' function.

Lately, I've received several 'likes' for some postings I've made in reply to some queries. I only posted because I thought I could contribute with information that might be useful - but having people 'like' my postings has left me with a feeling of a soft, warm glow. To know that I've posted something others have found helpful.

And yes, I've used the 'like' function myself, most recently trying to drum up enough votes to ban Monsanto and GMO. In Sweden, that is.

Begone!

The weirdest 'likes' I've seen on FB have been when people have posted horrible stuff that has happened to them.

e.g.

Terrible day today. Sore feet, was late for work and got a written warning from the boss, couldn't keep the dinner down due to a stomach bug and then the cat exploded"

"Paul Cheesman 'likes' this along with 3 others"

smiley - huh You're not supposed to 'like' stuff like that surely.

I guess it must be the facebook equivalent of a hug but it still seems an odd way of putting it.

I like the system on reddit, upvotes AND downvotes. Insightful, funny or helpful posts move to the top and if a post gets more than a few net downvotes it gets hidden (it can still be read by clicking a little [+] if you want to see how bad it was.)

Our local paper, but the online version, has more options. I think they are something "this makes me: Happy/Angry/interested/not care".
*goes to check*
At least I believe they had, but now I can't find any...
It was sort of useful, more variety than the "like". And I think only on blog entries or articles, not on individual posts.

Welcome to the wonderful world of gamification. People are just predisposed to like numbers going up, it seems.

Strictly speaking it's not gamefication in the current sense as there's no visible "reward", there's only the warm glow. But it's so close that there's not really any difference smiley - erm

You find people start posting, trying to get "likes" and up-votes.

Personally, I think it's a load of "meh".
