Omens of Oblivion: Meetng The Heir
Once they had all stabled their horses, Jauffre came hurrying out of the main building, and drew Freya aside. He could see that Vilena had no intention of being left out, so he invited her to come along too, and together they entered the east wing. Meanwhile the rest of the guild headed for the main hall, where Jauffre had promised a hot meal would be waiting for them. Kurz especially was eagerly looking forward to exchanging recipies with the residential chef, as he was alwas looking for new things to try out.
When Jauffre described what had happened at Weynon Priory, Freya sharply drew in her breath, while Vilena pounded the table with her fist in frustration.
'Are we too late then?' asked Freya.
'As long as we can keep Martin Septim safe, it's never too late. What we need to focus on righ now is to get the Amulet back as soon as possible,' replied Jauffre.
'I've already sent a message to Baurus to start looking for leads in the Imperical City, since I believe the Mythic Dawn are gathering their forces there.'
'Mythic Dawn?' Freya inquired.
'A cult, worshipping the Daedric Prince of Destruction, Mehrunes Degon. Remember how I told you how he was involved with Jagar Tharn in his plot to take over the empire years ago? It wouldn't surprise me if he's been planning a new attempt all these years.'
Jauffre suggested to Vilena that she join her guild in the main hall and have something to eat too. Hesitantly, Vilena looked at Freya, who nodded. When Vilena had left, Jauffre indicated someone seated at a table with his back at them, reading a book, whom Freya had taken for a monk:
'I'd like you to meet someone, come.'
'Martin, I'd like you to meet Freya, the woman to whom your father handed over the Amulet of Kings just before his death, and who faithfully brought it straight to me.'
Martin stood up and turned around, and Freya thought she could see a certain resemblance with the Emperor. He fixed his steel grey eyes on Freya, and when he started to speak, Freya was convinced - this was a voice that could lead an army, a voice that could instill courage, a voice to inspire heroic deeds. In short, the voice of a Septim.*
Martin thanked Freya profusely, confided in her, and pleaded to her. When he stopped talking, Freya was feeling so overwhelmed that, when Jauffre also thanked her for what she had done so far and offered her a honorary memebership in the Blades, she accepted without thinking.
It wasn't until later, when she was seated with a mug of hot, mulled cider together with her guild mates, that Freya fully realised what she had agreed to. She had agreed to let Jauffre become her superior, and she was now obliged to follow his orders.
Brooding darkly over her steaming mug, everyone was startled when a Blade barged in, shouting:
'Another gate to Oblivion has appeared - at Fort Sutch!'
