Last night, I was on my way home after a busy day. Wednesdays are always busy since I have Pilates in the morning, a full day of work and then Flamenco in the evening.

I missed the commuter train that would fit with a bus. Instead, I took the next train, which meant I had to walk home.

I've never had any trouble walking home - the area where I live is pretty quiet, and nothing ever seems to happen.

It wasn't all that late, somewhere between 8.30 and 9 pm. I was half way home when I heard running steps behind me.

I instinctively pulled the bag I was carrying up in front of me, and two teenage boys ran past me, without slowing down or stopping.

Afterwards, I realized the reason for my reaction was that I had heard murmuring voices behind me for some time. Now, in my opinion teenagers don't murmur, instead they tend to be a bit loud, if anything.

Anyway, quite some distance ahead, the two boys had stopped, as if waiting for something/someone. I was beginning to wonder if they planned to rob me (see, my instincts told me something was very wrong).

Instead, I suddenly heard running steps from behind me again, but this boy had first made sure to almost catch up with me by sneaking up quietly, so I didn't have time to react.

Luckily, he didn't get a very good grip, and I had a very firm grip, so I managed to snatch the bag away from him.

YOU BASTARD! THIEF! THIEF!

Shouting after him only sent him and his friends scuttling away and did nothing to relieve my fury, so I was still steaming when I finally got home (after having looked around repeatedly the rest of the way).

And I'm still miffed about it.

The reason they wanted they bag? Well, it's a neat, smart-looking black bag - I guess they thought I hade a notebook (computer) in it, but all it contained was sweaty exercise gear.

And I'm *not* going to switch to one of those bulky, brightly coloured, logo-covered sport bags because of this!

They'd better not try again. Next time I'll beat the living daylights out of them - because next time I'll know what to expect!

These things are really disgusting and upsetting.

You should report it to the police, even though they didn't get your bag. Perhaps the police would increase their patrols in that area. It sounds like they're well organized, which means thy'ss try again. And they've probably robbed other people.

Good for you for thwarting their efforts. I am glad, though, that you weren't hurt in the confrontation. You were outnumbered and could easily been overcome if they were so inclined.

I'll look in at the local police station on my way home to report it. Not much use though, since I only saw their backs. They all had caps on, so I don't know the hair colours, and those two that stopped and waited were too far away for me to see their faces clearly.

Well, at least the police will be alerted about what's going on...

Dang! They've moved the local police station - it's no longer where I thought it'd be!

And on my way home, what did I see? A police car with sirens and flashing lights passing me - with the two only policemen on duty in this district in it, probably busy doing something more important than listening to me...
