h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

It's New Year's Eve and I'm going to be busy all day. I've to hit the shops in St Peter's Ave at 9am, as I'm meeting Ian at the cinema at 9.45. After the film we're popping into my Mum's, hopefully to coincide with my sister who's fetching sandwiches. Then we're off to the Old Library to visit Ian's Mum, then down the road to Ian's daughter's to visit his youngest grandson Lucas. Then we're coming back here for a meal of sweet & sour chicken (with rice for me, chips for him) and a wine for him and a Malibu for me

Plenty to choose from on the box tonight, to bring in the New Year

Happy New year from me, too - to everyone. The kids have all gone and it's just us. TV will be lousy - Dinner for One on all channels. I might put on a DVD and do some ironing.

Your day sounds full of joy

I'll just be here with my Aged Relatives, but have a sort of selection of small bites to amuse them for supper. This is the first year that they will not see their old friends, with whom they've been celebrating the New Year since the 1950s. One is in hospital after a stroke, one is in residential care due to Alzheimers and another is really poorly. My two are just frail and old.

But I've bought mum some pink cava to go with the feast so I hope they will enjoy it a little and will remember the happy times.

I'm at work then I'll be at home trying not to fall asleep.

But then, I've never been big on a huge celebration for the New Year. Although any excuse to drink is ok by me

Hmm, not quite. I'm alone as Ian got called to the Home to escort his mother to hospital in the ambulance. Rapid Response checked her swelling leg and think she has a DVT in her groin. I've never seen Ian so annoyed - there's no-one available from the Home to escort her yet they're paying almost £500 for 24/7 care. I told him it didn't matter. There'll be other nights for us. But I guess I would have felt just as bad deserting him if it had been MY Mum rushed to hospital.

I will not comment on that, as I would be angry at the home

They kept her in... Ian made it here before midnight. Now I'm dealing with a water leak in my youngest son's flat which he can't cope with himself then off to see my own mother, I've promised to be there to answer the phone so my sister & brother can ring her to wish her happy new year, and I also want to phone Mum's brother in Whitby. It's all go.

Apparently she's due to have a scan today on her swollen leg, they're checking for the blockage. Thing is, they had to stop her Warfarin (blood thinner) a long time ago because it made her blood too thin. I am not sure if there's an alternative.

Here's hoping they sort her out soon, and in the meantime she's in the best place for proper monitoring.

Tomorrow is the Christening of his great-granddaughter Layla-Mai (in Rotherham). As we've discovered my car won't take a sat-nav due to my refusing the offer of a cigar-lighter 10 years ago, Ian's daughter has gone to the trouble of printing out directions for us (I don't own a printer) there AND BACK <---which I forgot when I drove to Sheffield for Allan's 30th birthday bash

drive at night - guidance by north star and ask any passing ships for directions

You can have them fitted GB, there should be a space for one. Or just use battery operated sat nav and have lots of spare batteries?

Ian says I've to ring the Ford garage I bought the car from and ask how much it'd cost to have one fitted, he's going to pay
