My daughter explained to me that GoogleTranslate doesn't have any dictionaries for the languages it translates. It searches the web for bilingual pages, and works out which words correspond to which by correlation. It can therefore be surprisingly good, as well as spectacularly bad.

I recently installed both a Danish-English dictionary and an English Thesaurus. Very helpful when Google Translator gives up or plays silly bugger

Google is just as good a translator as any - all to be taken with a large dose of common sense. I often look at Linguee, but it doesn't make as much effort as Gnomon's daughter's explanation of google - it just places the chunks of text side by side for the reader to do the work. Context is everything!
On a recent "Click" programme (World Service digital news - quite fun. My son loves it!) they were talking about a new social platform for the Moslem world, which translates into whichever language the reader speaks, so that Egyptians can communicate with Malayans etc. It only mentioned this in passing, but didn't say which translator they were using.
