A Conversation for The h2g2 Tour - An Introduction to h2g2

I have just finished reading this biography and is the reason I decided to join H2G2.
I found the book very interesting. I read it in about 3 days which is very quick for me. I read the Hitchhikers Guide to the galaxy trilogy when I was about 11. It has made me want to read it again and other Adams works, especially Last Chance To See. Would you recommend that or anything else?
The book did it's job, giving insight into the life and personality of it's subject. Did anybody whose read the book disagree with the way DOuglas was described in the book?
I look forward to this and other cosmic conversations,
have a great 2004,
Zap

Hi there, ZapTomBeetleLocks,
Have you read any of Douglas' 'Dirk Gently' books? They have a lot of similar themes to the Hitchhikers series. His non-fiction book 'Last Chance to See' is widely regarded as his best work because it has a real-life purpose - to save endangered species (something Douglas was very passionate about in the last years of his life).
The best thing about the Hitchhikers series is that it comes in a lot of different forms that all contradict each other, so you can continue to enjoy it in book form, on CD (the original radio series) and on DVD (the television version).
It might not be of interest, but Douglas also wrote two stories for Doctor Who that are available on video - 'City of Death' and 'The Pirate Planet' (though Pirate Planet is a little hard to come by now, you might see it repeated on cable).
Hope this helps,
Jimster

i would definitely recommend 'last chance to see' - by far his best work
but they're all good! get hitchhikers, dirk gently, and last chance (don't forget the liff's!) and read them all in rotation

I have always been a slow reader. I do enjoy the audio books from Douglas Adams. This is great in two ways. One is I can listen to the books while I drive insane distances for my work, and the other is they are in the voice of Adams himself. This has to be a plus. You hear the book in its intended mood. I have all five parts of the trilogy of four HitchHiker books and I got the Dirk Gently books from my local library. I even found an audio version of the Salmon of Doubt on iTunes. That I found a little spooky as I had just read the Salmon of Doubt forward by Stephen Fry and thought I would look at the Apple web site as Douglas was such a fan of all things Apple.
Read the Dirk Gently books, they are as mind toasting as the HitchHikers guide and a refreshing alternative from sci-fi.
Happy reading.
Billboy

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
