A Conversation for Harry Potter
The Movie

I like Fiona Shaw a lot, I think she'll be great.
I always have this image of Richard Griffiths as a benevolent 'could play Santa' type actor, but I think he will be good as well.
I hear they have cast Quirrell as well - some guy called Ian Hart who I've never heard of (so much for the Patrick Stewart rumours)

I supose Hermonie would be nice.
By the by, how do you prenounce her name?
I prenounce it hermonee.

In the fourth book, Rowling cleverly gives instructions for pronouncing Hermione's name.
It's her-my-oh-nee.
I supposed the film will solve some of these problems.

Aurora Posted Sep 11, 2000
But then she confuses you by making one of the foreign characters call her "Her-my-oh-ninny"...

Swiv (decrepit postgrad) Posted Sep 13, 2000
My cousins had a huge argument with me saying it was Herm-e-own.
The Movie
Princess Bride Posted Sep 13, 2000
I think it was her-my-oh-nee, not her-my-oh-ninny... But maybe I just don't know anything. I'm glad they are British actors instead of American. And I am American, I just think it needs to be set in the same culture as it was written...

I used to think it was Her-mee-one until I heard my friend's cassette version of Harry Potter & The Philosopher's Stone.

All in all it's not your typical kids book name. Which is nice - and quite typical of the series

Princess Bride Posted Sep 15, 2000
Very true. It is nice to not have mary and joe. harry is fairly common, but he's always referred to as Harry Potter so it's different somehow.
The Movie
Aurora Posted Sep 16, 2000
Is Potter a common name? I don't know anyone called that, but I don't know anyone called Harry either!

Swiv (decrepit postgrad) Posted Sep 16, 2000
I think they're neither too common - which it would be if he was called Jack Brown or something - nor to uncommon or weirdly wonderful.
Isn't the main point of it that in spite of all Harry's fame, he's still an ordinary boy?
The Movie
Aurora Posted Sep 17, 2000
Well, yes, if ordinary boys fly broomsticks, battle dragons and live in a wizard school.

ok then, ordinary underage wizard In that he doesn't know why he's special - and doesn't even think he should be.

Garghhhhh
apparently Richard Harris has pulled out from playing Dumbledore since they wouldn't give him a cut of the merchandise profits.

Book 5 is coming out in 2002 for those of you who don't know...
