The first mouse was not made by Apple. Apple made the first commercially available graphic user interface that depended on a mouse. The GUI was mostly developed at Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Center) through the 70s, and the mouse dates a bit further back than that, as I recall, though I don't recall the inventors name. It's also popular belief that Apple "stole" the GUI from a visit to PARC, but in fact Apple was well into development of a GUI by then and the visit to PARC served to solidify their ideas, not give them new ones. Microsoft, on the other hand, certainly based their GUI on the popularity of the Macintosh, which in those days of DOS and other disparate operating systems, enjoyed a 20% market share.
