An awful superhero

One of the most pathetic superheroes is Siegfried in Wagner's operatic tetralogy, 'The Ring'. The fact that Wagner thought he was wonderful tells you quite a lot about the composer. Siegfried was supposed by Wagner to be charmingly innocent, but in fact he is irremediably stupid. He gains a magic ring and enormous wealth by risking his life in combat with a dangerous dragon, but at no stage does he even consider using these. He only succeeds in using a magic helmet of invisibility to betray his lover to a newfound friend, and gets stabbed in the back by the latter's step-brother for his pains. Overall he achieves precisely nothing. Nul points.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
