A Conversation for How do I...?

How do I solve my PC upgrade problem?

I recently upgraded to a PC from an antique Amiga (I know, I know, but its operating system is STILL better than Windows & its NEWBIE~pleasing gimmicks) but anyway, now I'm "converted" how can I access my previous work? Is there ANY way to get the PC to read ASCII text files from an AMIGA formatted 3&half inch disk? I'm desperate as I REALLY don't want to re~type a 200,000 word document from memory!

I do not know anything about the Amiga, but is it possible to connect it to the internet?
In that case you can mail your stuff to the other pc.

I think the way you can't remember is to save on 5&quarter inch disks but I don't possess one (never mind TWO!) of those drives & getting hold of them is out of the question. But thanks anyway, I'll now let you get back to nostalgic memories of multiple~resolution screens. Aah, those were the days!

Its a nice idea but I don't have full internet access (this is sent from a freebie TV service) & until my money tree grows thats the way it'll stay. But I doubt if "the old fella" could cope with it anyway, it IS 15 years old (but still reliable!) I have tried a direct serial link but all attempts so far have failed. What would REALLY be perfect is PC software that could let the drive read the "alien" disk as the files themselves are obviously not a problem, its the different formatting thats killing me. But thanks for suggestion anyway.

Ooops, sorry. I don't really know what I'm doing on here yet & didn't realise there was special protocol & all that "ACE" stuff went way over my head. But I'll try to sort it out next time I'm in here. But don't hold me to that promise.

If you can find time on the internet, the solution may be found here:

They sell a system that says it can exchange data between Amiga and PC's.

ever thought of running some 'emulation' software on your PC? I know you can access old files on the spectrum using this method. Fire up a search engine, type in 'Amiga emulation' and you'll more than likely find an emulator for AmigaDos which should allow you to read the files - bear in mind you'll probably have to dowload several different utilities to run the emulation software. Once you've read the files, you should be able to port them to the PC system memory, then patch them in to a PC compatible client.

Hope this helps.

Wow, emulation software? I wasn't sure if it existed, it was more hopeful desperation than anything else. But what you described sounds perfect (providing it does what I think it does.) I'll definitely look into it & try to harrass a "rich" relative into some downloading duties. Many Thanks for the useful suggestion.
