PASSING THROUGH ??
Spanner Posted Aug 22, 1999
hi there Austin Morris, I'm from the other side of the world and I have found your how to do it link very useful except for one thing - i am obviously inputing this code stuff in the wrong place, because whenever i try to put it in (through journal entries) it just spits out what i typed and doesn't change anything. Help! i'm on MS Internet Explorer, and I wondered if that might have something to do with it. But then I don't know a great deal about computers, so i really have no idea. arrrgggh! I just want my page to look even half as good as yours, or Fenchurch's or Gigi's. Oh dear

Hi Spanner Grrl, thanks for dropping by, I'm probably not the best one to help you as I'm on the lower slopes of a learning curve myself, but I will if I can. The 'how to do it' comes from Pasteys page, I just put it up on mine as a quick ref to get to it easily. For difinitive answers you can post to Jim Lynne or you will find Madmunks or Vegimans pages/postings have lots of info.
I believe you'r right in that you can't alter text colours etc in the journal, it doesn,t take HTML text. But to alter 'Your Page' text go to the 'Edit Page' button (top l/h in the sticky goo) and get back the text you originally put into your page. Almost everything on my page is done from there.
For starters if you want to change the colour of the text surround it with text to be changed. Note.. use color, not colour spelling, In the opening tag substitute red/blue/green/why for "color" and dont mix upper/lower case in the opening/closing tags..and always use opening and closing tags.
If you want to make it flash use text to flash
If you want to put up a link to someone elses page, on your page, though you seem to have done this already, you will need to know the researchers No, So, you would insert name to link to Note.. U/number would be U12345 or whatever.
If you want the 'how to' ref on your page insertHow to do it
If you want the blue divider insert <*HEA*DER*> text in the divider </*HEADER*> Note... leave out the ** s I had to put them in to stop the tags taking over.
Enough for now, I hope this is answering some of your questions and I'm not telling you something you already know??
BTW, Groovy Baby best wishes.

Just a quick note to say that the tag won't show up on MSInternet explorer, it just looks like normal text. The blinking only shows up on Netscape. The opposite is true for the tag, on IE it will show as moving text, on netscape, it will be normal.
If you didn't understand, what this basically means is: you can't have scrolling text on netscape, and you can't have flashing text on IE.
Oh yeah, and your right, HTML doesn't work on forum/journal entries.

Hi Madmunk, . Thanks for the info, I didn't know that. You learn something new every day.I gotta say some very odd things seem to happen when using this html. That last posting of mine (above) went haywire when I previewed it before posting it. I put in the Blue Divider line code and it threw up about twenty lines of code. Also the researchers 'click on' tags have thrown up a totally spurious* /link* in the middle of my typed bit. It seems as if the program(?) tries to run the command and can't. That was why I had to re write the whole thing and throw in the extra ***s. Any comments on how to transfer info in the forums? it seems to have worked ok in all the others I've read. Anyway your help is much appreciated. I might get there one day.A.M.

Right, the best way to tackle HTML tags in forum entries is NOT to preview them. If you preview them the parser will alter all the tags, for no reason, and change the or xml tags into all those horrible tags.... http://www.h2g2.com/h2g2/skins/Alabaster/images/Smilies/f_sadface.gif" />
However, if your just post it straight, the parser doesn't get a look in, and leaves it all alone.
The only exception is that the forum automatically changes anything beginning with http:// into a link... this cannot be stopped, so it's best just to ignore it.....

Hello Austin. My best friend is named Austin Morris and I was wondering if it was him. I'm not sure if it is though since he would come up with some odd name. If it is you, you already know who I am. If not, I've just made a bloody good fool of myself.
About film quotes
Gambold Posted Sep 23, 1999
I'm sorry to put this out in public, but I could find no other way of contacting you. :/
I was reading your entry about film quotes and stoped at this one:
'Play it once Sam, for old times sake' (NOT 'Play it again Sam) Ingrid Burgman in Casablanca
I feel strongly that a more correct spelling is `Ingrid Bergman'
While I'm writing I might also add a quote I like, though I have to admit I forgot who said it. But this is from Alien 2 `Game over man, game over'
If someone knows all details please don't hesitate to include theme because I think it's a good quote.

Hi Gambold, You're quite right of course, Thanks for your comments and taking the trouble to let me know. There's probably a few others in there, I'll put the corrections in at the next rewrite.
BTW you can comment on a particular 'page' by clicking on the 'Discuss this entry' forum at the bottom of each page.
Thanks again All the best, A.M.

Hi Peet, Thanks for dropping by. Sorry to have been so slow to get back to you but I've been on hol's.
Actually I rather thought my red on blue was ..erm.. rather artistic. I've been looking for another page to refer you to that I came across but can't find it at the moment, It REALLY hurts the eyes, You'll need a radiation shield or welding goggles to look. I'll get back to you if I find it again. Best Wishes A.M.

I guess choosing user numbers at random and then visiting their home pages qualifies as "passing through"...I love just wandering around h2g2...it's like some giant amusement park or something...

Hi ffmike, Thanks for dropping by, I think I do the same sort of random 'surfing' but mostly using the who's on list. There's always something new to find in the pages. Anyway its good to hear from you, Best Wishes A.M.

Hi Austin! Just noticed you were top of the "whose on" list and thought I'd drop by and see what's happening over here , nice to see my film quotes got on your list , ta! Interesting Apocalypse idea, I'm going with the deadly virus theory! Also see you've had quite a few articles accepted, have you done one of these fun runs yet?? I really must get round to writing a couple of entries for submission.
No motorbike animation yet!!??? I have found a little surf animation and a place to upload it to but I can't get it to work yet.
Anyway see you around.
Cheers! Waxer

Hi Waxer, Yes the 'quotes' thingy is about as finished as I can get it. I'm in two minds to submit it because I guess there will always be something else to add on so it's probably not really suitable, but I can't think of anything else to do with it except just keep it on my page. I guess I could put it up for afun run but I think the places are mostly taken. Oh well.
No motorcycle either. I'm getting bogged down with trying to get a picture I took onto the page. no success. Tried several times to get other piccys from the web but no go either. Your page seems to be swell but I miss the mini cam pics I quite enjoyed checking out the weather in the west.
The 'apocalype' page is turning out to be rather more involved than I first thought.Research on it is getting me into some very odd websites. BTW, Is "interesting", interesting, or 'this blokes a nutter'? In other words, is it worth carrying on with?
All the best A.M.

Waxer Posted Oct 12, 1999
Interesting is definitely interesting, but that doesn't mean your not a nutter!!I think I may put the surfcam back up actually so you'll be able to pop by for a weather check. I set myself up with some personal webspace today to see if I could get my surf animation up but still no luck ,Perhaps it's got some copyright code in it , I don't remember where it came from but it works fine on my computer , also have made a little animation of my own but can't get that up either.Still it wouldn't be fun if it wasn't a challenge!
Cheers

Persistence pays off I got the above animations to run now tho' my own one runs too fast. Do they work for you? , I know some things work on netscape and some on Explorer ie the blink thing, I can only see them move on Netscape I just get 2 frozen images with Explorer.(which isn't so cool as I guess more people are on Explorer these dayds??)
