h2g2 wap bug

Oh my god it works!!!
Giving up on these WAP gateways, I entered my normal ISP settings into my 7110 and set wap.h2g2 to be the homepage, and as if by magic its all there, at last, I suggest you do the same for general browsing and use Fonedata's gateway for its services such as POP email retrieval. Check out my above wapfreaks link for instructions on setting up your phone correctly. I'm so happy now I'm off to hug my towel.

My towel gently weeps.
*sighs* OK I admit it I'm crap, the above wapfreaks link is for the WAP portal the internet link should be http://users.anytimenow.com/wapfreaks/
I'm sorry I'll stop trying things from memory and test em first

Thanks! It's a pretty good site, even if they don't mention us in their links page
One thing to watch out for - not all WAP Gateways are created equal. Some of them, like the WAPfone Gateway, do nasty things like truncating URLs before they pass them on to the web server. Unsurprisingly, this causes problems when trying to connect to some pages.
I've found that the Vodafone gateway works, though I haven't tested any of the others recently.

Hmm, Nope the vodaphone gateway either crashes my phone or just reyurns the message "connection to service failed".
Still with Fonedata and Freeserve using h2g2 as a home page I seem to be able to get all I want, so I guess I'm just being greedy and should stop trying. Incidently any chance of anyone converting the h2g2 logo as a graphic for my 7110. My artistic skill are dreadful and I cant recreate it. The software required can be found easily fromn my above Wapfreaks link.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you - I haven't had access to a working phone for the last couple of weeks.
Are you sure your Connection Type is set to Temporary? Surprisingly, it does make a difference.

Don't know why but it works now, without me changing anything. I agree the Vodaphone site is quite a good one on the surface. Will play around and see what I think of its useability.

One thing to look out for is your phone firmware version. I know that Nokia has upgraded the firmware at least once since we bought our 7110s in January.
I can't remember the sequence of digits to type into your phone to get it to tell you the firmware version, but it's probably somewhere on the internet. Alternatively, you could point your phone at wap.h2g2.com and I could look in the logs.

OK Report so far.
Vodafone site is ok, but it wont go to h2g2, it can't locate the server. Fonedata I think is still the better. That can find h2g2 but I can't get past the home page or Don't Panic page everything else gives;
error:server returned
unsupported content
type: tex/und.wap.wml
cache-control
no cache pragma
no cache
That means nothing to me!!!!
Good old Freeserve my ISP lets me access h2g2 with no problems. I logged in recently and made a test journal entry, (which worked).
Do you have enough info to check the log?
Incedently you have to log on to add journal entry but there is no log off option, should there be?

Another point. The Journal entry appears twice on my home page. I definately only sent it once.

That's a problem with the Fonedata gateway: it can't understand HTTP headers properly.
What it's saying is that it can't understand any HTTP headers other than "type" and rather than ignoring the other headers it's giving an error. I'll get in contact with the guy who runs it and see what he says.

There is no log off option at present - once you're logged in, h2g2 will remember who you are until you turn the phone off or until you go to a bookmark that someone else made when they were logged in.
Is this what people want?

British-Towel Posted Jun 10, 2000
How do I make a WBMP? I'm looking to make a site for a small non-profit making organisation, and a small graphic on the start page would really do it proud.

Thank you very much for that. I would recommend to anyone that they try the WBMP conversion at ApplePie solutions.
