where did you get a 7110 from, and which network are you on?

Jim Lynn Posted Dec 19, 1999
The bitmap we were using wasn't a WBMP and threw off the 7110. This has since been fixed, so try it again and see what you get. We've now been able to try it on a real 7110 and not just a simulator, so we know it works now.

Ok. I have an Orange Nokia 7110e wap phone; I can access all the Orange bumph. How do I point at wap.h2g2.com ? I've tried entering the URL as a bookmark etc but it seems to me that the Orange WAP server will have to allow me to jump off elsewhere. Is there any other route into the h2g2 wap server ?
A single lonely request from me to Orange to enable the link will get nowhere. How about the Digital Village folks having a go ?
Thanks!
Pat

If we had a 7110 ourselves, we might be able to help you out. It might depend on the service you're using to get WAP. We suspect that some operators might restrict the sites that you can get to to a specific list. My only suggestion is to ask Orange tech support.

Hi Jim,
I'm a bit confused about this. As far as I know, the only *real* working (commercial) WAP phones in the UK at the moment at the Orange Nokia 7110 phones.
On the WAP settings there are a whole bunch of things that can be changed - home page, dialup number, IP address, connection type and so forth. The phone comes pre-programmed to point at the Orange WAP service.
So, I'm not really surfing 'the Internet'. I am ring-fenced in an Orange provided service, that sucks in data from various sources (ITN, for example). I can't just point at any old arbitrary WAP server (like wap.h2g2.com).
So - what needs to happen ?
In order to access wap.h2g2.com from a Nokia 7110 phone, how do I actually go about it in real life. Does it depend on some interconnect deal between Orange and Digital Village ? Do Digital village provide a dialup number ?
Help!

Doh!
The Nokia 7110e phone is completely out of stock with Orange.
The 7110 is available on Vodaphone and BT Cellnet networks - but I've no idea if either of these provide access to wap.h2g2.com.
Does anyone know?
Another thing... is it worth splashing out £130 on the 7110, which is, by and large, a pretty bulky item when dozens of WAP phone will be available in the New Year... and competition should bring the entry level price down a bit (hopefully).
Hmm. How much do I want h2g2 on the move NOW?

I'm still waiting to get hold of a 7110e, but from what I have read the Orange WAP service is a closed system so can't access other Wap sites.
To get around this it should be possible to enter your normal ISP dial-up number into the Nokia's settings and then use h2g2 as your home page.
For further info have a look at The Nokia 7110 forum.

Also My Briefcase will be providing settings for accessing Email through their system soon.

Hope this helps.

You can get to the h2g2 WAP url using a data call on an orange phone if you have the following
a) a normal PPP dial up account from an ISP - as you probably have for dial up internet access
b) Access to a public WAp gateway - eg ericsson's 195.58.110.201
Set the bearer settings as follows
> > > Homepage: http://wap.h2g2.com (or set a bookmark)
> > > Connection type: continuous
> > > connection security: Off
> > > Bearer: Data
> > > Dialup number:
> > > IP Address 195.58.110.201
> > > Authentication type: normal
> > > Data call type: Analog
> > > Data call speed: 9600

> > > password:
And that's all!

Using the settings as in the above message on an orange 7110e, I can't get access. I've tried a couple of service providers, could there be problems with the gateway number?
Have other people had these settings working?

I've just tried to access h2g2 from a Nokia 7710 on Cellnet. The home page loads and I can read the 'Don't Panic' section but the other sections wither don't work or return a 'Server returned unsupported content type: text/html' message.
Will keep trying

Having firmly bit my tongue, and resisted the awfully strong temptation to rush out and buy a 7110 just so *I* could the the saddest git in the pub on New Year's eve showing off my amazing ability to connect to the internet...
I'm now wondering when the market will hot up a bit, new phones be made available, and TPTB in the world of the net get their WAP sites fully up and running. Are we talking weeks or months here?
If it's months I guess I'll just get a v-dot instead so I can be the saddest git in the pub with the smallest phone...

again, with recent attempts it seems only the front page and the"dont panic" section are working.
by the way, for those who can get a WAP enabled phone I recommend that you do! Now I have email access 24/7/365 (www.yourwap.com). Thats
just one of the great things coming to WAP...

What happens when you try and read articles or look at the forums on the wap service?

If you're getting "Unsupported content type" errors, it may be worth changing your gateway settings. Try using Vodafone's gateway as detailed on http://www.vodafone.net/ppp/help/Nokia7110ConfigGuide.htm
This should work over any operator's network, not just Vodafone.

Warning!!!!
Don't Panic, and don't use Orange's WAP Portal, it may be free but thats cos its not worth anything.
Check out www.wapfreaks.com or www.wapforum.com to get settings for a multitude of WAP portals that do what theyre supposed too.

Where did you find lists of gateways on the WAP Forum site? And what is www.wapfreaks.com? I can't get anything from their site at all!

Oooops
My mistake, still this is a forum posting not a piece of journalism.
The address for Wapfreaks is really
http://www.wapfreaks.cjb.net
This is without doubt one of the best places to start, the wap forum site is difficult to navigate to find the links.
