'Death is not an event in life: we do not live to experience death. '

Wittgenstein: Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1922) (section 6.4311)

Any thoughts?

Thats a good one Jabs!

Indeed i think life is for the living - i mean the domain of the living , namely us.

And it is here, when we are alive , right now, that we live our lives.

Wittingstein is a 20th century philosopher right Jabs?

That’s a very wise and kind post, smiley - prof, its kindness to others probably influenced by Christian views.

You may be interested to know that the widespread idea that life has no meaning except the one/s you give it stems from the Existentialists in France around the end of the Second World.
Take Sartre for example [people may be surprised he was notable not just for sharing my birthday]. In Being And Nothingness 1943:

“Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does.
It is up to you to give [life] a meaning.”

myk - the full Wittgenstein quote is very beautiful and profound:

Death is not an event in life: we do not live to experience death. If we take eternity to mean not infinite temporal duration but timelessness, then eternal life belongs to those who live in the present. (Tractatus 1922 section 6).

Interestingly, both these quotes (Sartre + Witt'n) come out of a World War. Indeed, much of the Tractatus was written in the German trenches.

The awful title was not Wittgenstein's own - it was suggested by Bertrand Russell, who had been his tutor at Cambridge - but it owed nothing to Russells's philosophy.

Yes, myk, these are both modern philosophers.

Before I try to go looking up other people's quotes, I'm going to present something I've been thinking about for a very long time.

Somewhere in the Bible, Jesus is quoted as saying, "The Kingdom of God is at hand." I take this to mean that you don't have to *wait* for divine revelation, it's right here, right now. You may need to work hard to discern what it is, but your effort will be rewarded. As for having to wait for the end of the world/second coming of Christ, you are guaranteed that the world you see and experience will come to an end on the day you die. People die at different times, so their worlds end on different days as well.

For the time being, we have a rolling end of the world.
