The Jabberwock's Lair
Jabberwock Started conversation Feb 25, 2010
Olney, in North Buckinghamshire, England, is where I live and this is the historic Olney Pancake Race, which was first run - from The Bull inn to the Church of St. Peter and St.Paul -as it still is - in the 14th century:

At the beginning, they seemed to be carrying pans with pancakes in them. Are they supoosed to carry the pans the whole way?

Exactly, Paul. They have to toss the pancakes and try not to drop them before they set off, too.

How on earth do you get away with it without having armies of paramedics and Health and Safety Inspectors demanding that people have passed a course in pancake tossing?

Perhaps it's because we're tucked away in the countryside, well away from the nosey parkers of the metropolis.

So, are they carrying the pans of pancakes to the people at the finish line?

Somewhat reminiscent of the bunch of loonies who run down a 1 in 4 hill, trying to catch a cheese!!!!

Jabs I am very interested in local customs and in Essex at the Bell Inn at Hordon-on-the-Hill where very old hot cross buns have been put on one of the beams.

I should have said that our race is similar to the one indicated in my previous post.

I wonder if many of these unusual races had their genesis in end-of-winter cabin fever. People were so bored by this time of the winter that they seized upon any excuse for a little excitement. If pancakes or eggs or trays of food could be worked into it as well, so much the better!

Maybe cabin fever ! Maybe parent fever??
In the UK our school sports days were full of such feverish peruits.
Just googled "sports day" and it seems we in the UK are not the only header in the world!
Here is the premier event of the day maybe : (?)

and for those who like team sports:

those are the two premier events IMO - but the pancake race takes some beating *Pancakes* - "beating lol- get it

It must get dull when the only exciting moment of the day is when one gets to see the cream get whipped.

Very tiring. At the end of a long day of whipping, it must feel beat.

Sado-masochism has a long history of involvement with dairy products i think....
As for Morris dancing & maypoles; well, draw your own conclusions...(in a plain brown envelope, please)
