What's the AFP?
One of our projects at work is on all the epidemiology around preventing youth smoking, so I've had to learn lots about tobacco for the research and all the paper writing.

Hi, Mikey! I just wanted to drop you a note to say...well more like ask you a question about nasty dieases. Well not exactly dieases but secondary infections from scratching. Every chance I get I try to find info on how to prevent them or some way to stop my 2 year old from scratching her way to them. We have stumped 5 different doctors and if you have any info it would be welcome. Thank you

She doesn't get any because she can't eat dairy or wheat. I just thought I would ask on the off chance you might have heard of a simmilar occurance. I'll try to be more funny next time.

Whoa, boo!
Check the sender, i´m DEFINATELY not the health expert, and i don´t think this place has a "must be hilarious-clause"..I was refering to and older posting.. Please don´t listen to me, if you´re the least bit serious, Just sit back, read a glitty mag, and wait for the nice Dr.Mouse to call you into her office.,OK?

Easy there cowboy, I think you got the wrong impression. You see, I have gotten alot of useful information from people just like you who don't have a Dr. in front of their name. It looked as if you were trying to answer my question so lets forget the whole thing and start out on a different foot. Lets say the left. Ready? Why do you think it gives a general feeling of discomfort to sit in a chair and realize that the seat is already warm? Tag your it!

Hmm.. Tricky one, though anybody probably knows what u mean..
(esp. reg. hot toiletseats)
..Something to do with the uncertainty about WHO or WHAT was just there, and the notion that they, or it, might be lurking under the table?
(if u ain´t got a clue what i mean by that..just ferget it,OK? Dont fancy a "paranoid" tag)
..Hmm..
Please enlighten me, if possible.
BTW,not being a dr.&all,bt i take f´granted that you´ve tried all sorts of antiseptics, without sparkling success..(?)

Hmmm... secondary infections from scratching is a tough one with little kids.
Usually it's worth taking 2 different tracks at the same time (although both of these are probably things you've already tried)
1) Do what you can to keep scratches from becoming infected in the first place. This would include bathing her more often that you might normally, washing all scratches with an antiseptic (like rubbing alcohol), and keeping any open scratches banadaged if possible (there are some sneaky ways out there to keep bandages on toddlers who want to pull them off, but they do require some extra effort).
2) Use some behavior modification type stuff to reduce her scratching. There are several different things you can do, but the most important thing is to be as consistent as possible -- if you always react the same way, she'll learn much faster. You can try things like:
Every time she starts scratching, take her hands and hold them some place like flat on a table (or even her lap, or against each other), and say in a firm voice, "No scratching". Don't say anything else, hold her hands there for a few seconds, and then let go. After that, as soon as you see her doing something other than scratching (playing or whatever), praise her for that -- i.e., "Good job playing nicely!" The idea is for her to learn that she gets more attention for not scratching.
Good luck!

Hi! I'm wondering if you'd help me with something. You seem to be well educated and probably a doctor. If I am wrong, please let me know. Basically I am looking for people who have been through medical school while working(?) who can tell me how I might best accomplish the same. I'll give you background etc. if you'll say you'd help. No worries if you can't or if you have a suggestion as to who else I could ask... I'm just not getting any younger working at something that I'm not interested in. May I also say congrats on the whole microbial princess thing. I'm a mascot now! Nice to meet you officially, and thanks for your time.

Nope, not a doctor -- I'm an epidemiologist. Got into medical school, but couldn't go. Did work through undergrad and grad school, and had been planning on working through med school if I had gone, so I might be able to help a bit.
Feel free to drop me an email at [email protected] if you like.
Good luck with it all!
Mikey

Oh, how very interesting! I'll probably drop you a line anyway! Never met an epidemiologist before! I mean y.pestis has, but not me personally. Woo-hoo! There's a funny article blaming cats (toxoplasma gondii, really) for all manner of things on Reuters today. It was just funny the way it was worded. I'm gonna go rest now. Thanks for the help.

Hi there, Smiler!
And hi, Thomas Scott! Although I was the sub-editor on the Jake Thackray entry, us sub-editors don't have any access to the entry to make changes after the entry has made it into the Edited Guide.
If you'd like to see the entry updated with the news of his death, I'd suggest you check on the Update Forum for some different ways you could accomplish that. Just see UpdateForum.
