The one time you don't phone the airport to ensure that the plane is on time is the one time that it will invariably be late. In addition, the length of the delay increases in direct proportion to the number of small children you have in tow.

The length of the delay also corresponds inversely to the quality of the airport you are forced wait in.

If your flight is late, the connecting flight will be on time, but the reverse if never true. Especially if they are at opposite ends of the airport.

The distance between two gates in any connecting flight is the inverse function of the amount of time you have to make the connection. If time is really short there will be at least one bus transfer involved and the queue at the one working x-ray machine will be spectacular.
Also, the more of a hurry you're in the more likely it is that your suitcase strap will fail.
