The burrow is on the sunny side of a hill, near to the forest. In the meadow that is my garden. I think I *did* see other holes further down between the fruit trees but they looked closed.

I actually did consider ground squirrels as they do at least live in our area. On the other hand I think there must be many more holes as they have large colonies? Or did I just not see all the holes yet?

Not sure about rats, I've never seen a rat burrow.

Most burrowing animals make sure they have more than one exit, in case of emergencies, so there are probably other holes about.
Only way I can think of to find out what lives there is set up a camera trap.
