The burrow is on the sunny side of a hill, near to the forest. In the meadow that is my garden. I think I *did* see other holes further down between the fruit trees but they looked closed.
I actually did consider ground squirrels as they do at least live in our area. On the other hand I think there must be many more holes as they have large colonies? Or did I just not see all the holes yet?
Not sure about rats, I've never seen a rat burrow.

No dung outside. So whatever it is, it's got an indoor toilet

There may be more than one entrance/exit. So, there might still be dung outside one of the other holes.

Most burrowing animals make sure they have more than one exit, in case of emergencies, so there are probably other holes about.
Only way I can think of to find out what lives there is set up a camera trap.

Or, leave the creature to live in peace. Think of the anxiety it feels when it senses intruders.
